Digital Rights Management
Digital Rights Management, or DRM, are a set of technologies
that puts the content creator and owner in control of how and when
their content is consumed. Bow Tie is already a licensed provider
of Windows Media DRM (WMRM) and is
beginning its rollout of PlayReady, Microsoft's latest DRM
technology, onto its platform.
Using DRM enables the content owner to ensure that content
can be viewed by only those that have been authenticated; that
payment has been taken; that geographical and age-based
restrictions are enforced; and that access to content can be
expired at a future point in time.
Content is secured by a strong encryption method. For a consumer
to use the content, they must aquire a license from the
content owners' DRM provider, such as
Bow Tie. This license contains a set of rights that the content
owner gives to the user. These rights can be to play a certain
number of times, or to play until a certain date, to burn to
CD, etc. These rights are
enforced by the user's player software.
